I changed quickly, pulling on something casual but still sharp enough to fit in. It wasn't like I cared what anyone thought, but the last thing I needed was to draw attention for the wrong reasons. Once I was done, I headed downstairs.

The Grand Dining Room was bustling with people, the scent of freshly baked bread and simmering stews filling the air. A long buffet stretched along one side, a feast of colors and aromas, each dish meticulously laid out in perfect rows.

Adam and Robert were chatting in the corner. They both looked up when I approached.

"How's Sophia?" I asked.

"She's still not feeling well," Robert said.

I frowned. "I hope she gets better soon," I said.

Tabitha Langley walked in. "Lunch will be buffet style today," she said, gesturing toward the array of stations. "We have roast chicken with a garlic rosemary glaze, a fresh seafood salad with lemon vinaigrette, and a selection of cheeses. For dessert, there's a chocolate fondue fountain with seasonal fruit for dipping. Don't be shy, everyone. Dig in."

The guests, eager for the lavish spread, immediately began rising to grab plates. I followed, piling mine high with vegetables, some tender chicken, and a generous scoop of mashed potatoes.

I sat down near Robert and Adam, who were already digging in, their plates piled high. Eveline was in the corner, her martini in hand, glowering over the rim as if the whole room had offended her.

"How's the food, Alicia?" she asked. "Did you manage to find something that wasn't too rich for you?"

I shot her a flat look but didn't answer. I was used to her cheap shots by now, but it didn't make them any less irritating.

Fiona, who was sitting on the other side of the table, turned to me. "How did your morning go?" she asked.

"We played pickleball. It was fun," I replied.

Eveline rolled her eyes dramatically. "Except Alicia cheated," she said, stifling a snicker.

"There was no cheating. At least not from Alicia," Adam said firmly.

Eveline scoffed. "Oh, please. We all saw how she 'accidentally' hit the ball in ways that defied physics." She rolled her eyes again, making it clear she wasn't letting it go.

Robert shrugged. "Well, she is a witch. And we're all vampires. It's not surprising the game got a little . . . interesting."

Eveline's eyes narrowed as she turned her attention back to Adam and Robert. "I don't understand why both of you keep defending her. Did she cast a spell on you or something?"

I took a deep breath, forcing myself to stay composed. There was no point in letting Eveline get to me. "I need to use the washroom," I said, standing up from the table and walking away.

As I walked toward the hallway, I overheard Eveline's voice. "Adam, I just wonder how much of this relationship you have," she said, her hand gesturing between me and Adam, "is truly you . . . and how much is a little bit of witchcraft."

Her words hung in the air like a taunt, but I kept my focus on the path ahead, my heart pounding in my chest.
